ARE YOU NOT ENTERTAINED???? Hopefully not.

Many of you know that prior to 2008, personal fitness training was not subject to state and city sales tax. In 2008, the Missouri Department of Revenue decided that fitness training/going to the gym to workout/bettering your health and wellness is entertainment and therefore is subject to tax. Springfield Representative Eric Burlison has filed a bill to exempt fitness classes from this tax. If you agree that fitness training is a service and not entertainment, please contact your state representative and let him/her know you support the passage of Representative Burlison’s bill (HB 149). You can find contact information for your representative at www.house.mo.gov. Look under House Members then go to Directory of Representatives or Legislator Look Up.

Feel free to use any or all of the verbiage in the sample letter. Including your personal reasons for taking classes and the benefits those classes have been to you would be great.

“Dear Representative_____________________

My name is _______________. I live at ___________________. I have participated in physical fitness training for some time now. I find it a great service as it motivates me to exercise regularly and ensures that I do it correctly.

Research has shown that being physically active helps the cardio-vascular system, lowers blood pressure and cholesterol and improves weight control. There is also a positive connection between physical fitness and exercise and cognitive performance in healthy aging. A physically fit population will help keep health care costs down.

I ask that you support HB 149 introduced by Representative Eric Burlison and co-sponsored by Representative Charlie Davis. Passage of this bill will recognize fitness classes as a service that is a health benefit rather than “entertainment”. Physical fitness training promotes wellness and is often used for rehabilitation purposes. Missouri citizens should not be taxed to stay or become physically fit.

Sincerely,”
