Hi, I’m Darnell. I have been a CrossFit athlete since 2013 and a coach here at CrossFit Springfield (CFS) since 2014. Physical fitness has always been an important aspect of my life due to my competitive sports background, I have tried numerous fitness programs and platforms. I am also a firm believer in a fit mind as well as body and have a degree in Accounting with additional declared majors in Music and Computer Science.
I really owe my CrossFit experience and career to my mom. Walking in her door a couple of years ago for a visit and hearing, “Darnell you’re getting fat!” as her first words to me was a wakeup call (Mom always keeps it real!). There were negative changes going on with my body that I had not noticed myself. Admittedly, this hurt my athlete pride a little bit and spurred me to try this new killer workout a fiend had told me about called CrossFit. Intrigued, I attended a 6am WOD and was absolutely blown away by a workout unlike anything I had experienced before. That was in 2013.
In August 2014, I was given the opportunity to become a coach after several months of both participating and competing as an athlete at CFS. I started with the 7pm ROW Class and have since branched out into coaching Group WOD’s. Becoming a CrossFit coach here at CFS has been truly transformational in my life. I have learned so much from my fellow coaches and know we here at CFS have a truly exceptional cadre of coaches. I feel that becoming a CrossFit coach has gained me personal growth by enhancing my leadership ability, honing my communication skills, and increasing my self-confidence to achieve difficult life tasks.
However, the biggest thrill that I get from coaching is the interaction with the athletes. Seeing the transformational switch in a CrossFit athlete where they go from thinking “I think I can…” to “I know I can!” generates the coolest feeling ever! I also really enjoy seeing athletes fall in love with the process of being successful. The relationships that are built while coaching are absolutely priceless. I thrive on the interaction with each athlete, and it is absolutely the best part of my day. Getting to know them, their families, their histories, and their goals makes it a great privilege when they allow me to lead them on their journey of fitness and wellness.
